Sony’s upcoming Xperia Pro will feature the first-ever rotating camera ring.

A recent leak on Weibo has unveiled intriguing details about the upcoming Sony’s Xperia Pro model, suggesting an innovative feature that could set it apart in the competitive smartphone market. According to the leak, the Xperia Pro is anticipated to introduce a rotating camera ring—a design element not seen before in mainstream smartphones.

The rotating camera ring is expected to serve as a versatile control mechanism, managing key functions such as zoom, aperture, and focus. This design choice draws parallels to the manual controls found on DSLR and mirrorless camera lenses, offering users a tactile and potentially more intuitive way to interact with their device’s camera settings.

However, the leak also introduces a challenge: the primary source is in Chinese, and details were disseminated through the Japanese site Sumahodigest, posing potential language barriers for those seeking to fully comprehend the information. Despite this hurdle, it is discerned from the available data that the camera setup of the Xperia Pro will share similarities with the existing Pro-I model. This includes a rotating ring encompassing the lenses, allowing users to manipulate specific features individually.

The leak also raises questions about Sony’s ability to seamlessly integrate variable aperture adjustments, considering the limitations observed in the Pro-I model, which could only switch between f/2.0 and f/4.0 without intermediary steps. The speculation suggests a potential wider aperture range between f/1.2 and f/4.0 in the new Pro model, indicating the possibility of multiple aperture steps for a more nuanced control.

Moreover, the leak hints at a broader application for the rotating ring beyond camera controls. Sony’s Xperia phones, extending beyond the Pro series, can serve as external displays for the company’s mirrorless cameras. The rotating ring could potentially serve as a supplementary control interface for connected cameras, adding an extra layer of functionality to the device.

As anticipation builds for the prospective Sony Xperia Pro-II, expected to debut next year—three years after the introduction of the Pro-I—more details are likely to surface as the launch date approaches. An earlier leak hinted at enhancements to all three camera modules, and the Xperia 1 VI and 5 VI may accompany the new Pro model, either at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) or a dedicated launch event
